An O-ring is a gasket used on SEA&SEA housings to keep them waterproof. You will find O-rings sealing the buttons, ports and doors of all SEA&SEA housings. All SEA&SEA O-rings are colored blue.![]()
How do I care for my O-rings?![]()
It is best to clean and lubricate the door and port o-rings before each use. Visit the Basic Maintenance page HERE.
O-rings may be cleaned with fresh water and then lubricated with SEA&SEA silicone grease. It is important to use only the suggested silicone grease. Other types of grease may cause the o-ring to become gummy, attracting debris. For all other sealed O-rings, have them serviced annually by a SEA&SEA Service Facility.![]()
How do I clean my cameras housing?![]()
After each use it is important to soak your camera housing in fresh water. This should be done before any salt water or chlorine has had time to dry. Be certain that your housing is sealed before you submerse it in water. Activate all buttons and controls while soaking. DO NOT USE any other chemicals or cleaning agents on your camera housing!
What is a Mega Pixel?![]()
A Mega pixel is a tiny sensor that records red, blue or green light. The number of Mega pixels determines the resolution of the camera. An eight mega pixel camera will have better resolution than a five mega pixel camera.![]()
What is resolution?![]()
Resolution is determined by the concentration of pixels in one area. The concentration of pixels in one area determines picture quality (sharpness). An image that has 500 pixels per inch will have better quality (be sharper) than an image that only has 100 pixels per inch.![]()
What is a Memory card?![]()
Your memory card will be the equivalent to film for your digital camera. The larger the card, the more pictures you will be able to store on it. A 2GB memory card will store more pictures than a 1GB memory card. The most popular types of memory cards are SD (Smart Digital) and CF (Compact Flash) cards. The camera will specifically accept either the SD or CF style cards, but will not accommodate both styles.![]()
Why are my pictures filled with little white dots?![]()
The white dots that some times appear on your pictures are called backscatter. Backscatter occurs when the cameras flash reflects of the small particles in the water. To prevent backscatter, you will need to light your subject from an angle. Lighting your subject from an angle will prevent the debris in the water reflecting straight back at you camera lens.![]()
Do I need a strobe?![]()
Yes. A strobe will add the light to your picture that has been lost underwater. A strobe will bring out the natural colors of your subject creating a more vibrant picture.![]()
What strobe should I buy?![]()
SEA&SEA strobes range from beginning user to professional photographer. Make your decision based on your current skill level and the level you would like to become. Buy a strobe that you or your camera does not plan to grow out of.![]()
What is a Fiber Optic Cable (F.O.C.)?![]()
A fiber optic cable transfers light from your camera to your strobe. Picture it as a garden hose for light. The cable transfers light from your cameras flash to your external strobes light sensor. The strobes light sensor tells the strobe to flash.![]()
What is a Sea Arm?![]()
SEA&SEA has created different mounting options for strobes called Sea Arms. The Sea Arm sets are designed to be used with most compact digital cameras and also can be used with SLR systems. Sea Arms with a tray will attach to the tripod mount on your cameras housing using a tripod screw. The Sea Arm will then attach to the camera tray at one end. The other end of the arm will then attach to your strobe. The Sea Arm can be maneuvered in any position necessary.![]()
What is a Strobe Mask Set?![]()
The Strobe Mask Set includes Velcro material and grommet. The Strobe Mask Set allows you to attach the fiber optic cable to most camera housings. The Strobe Mask Set will also mask off any light from your cameras flash, preventing the chance of backscatter.![]()
Do I need a color filter for my compact digital camera?![]()
Color filters are no longer necessary to use. With the proper camera settings and after market photo software, the image color can be corrected and manipulated with ease.![]()
What is a Dessicant pack?![]()
A Dessicant pack absorbs moisture. Dessicant packs are a very useful item to have for any camera housing. Whether you are diving in a mild climate or the tropics, dessicant packs absorb unwanted moisture in your cameras housing.

A zoom gear will mount to a zoom lens, for example an 18-55mm lens. This gear will allow you to zoom from 18mm to 55mm with a control knob on the housing. The zoom gear is not a permanent attachment to your lens. The gear may be removed or attached to your lens by simply sliding it on or off.![]()
Do I need two strobes?![]()
It is not required to use two strobes however; using two strobes may greatly improve your pictures. Using two strobes (dual strobes) will help eliminate dark shadows and give your images a more even feel and look.![]()
What is a TTL or YS converter?![]()
A TTL/YS converter transfers exposure and image information from your digital SLR camera to the strobe. The TTL/YS converter tells the strobe how much light the camera needs to properly expose an image. The TTL/YS converter automatically adjusts to the proper lighting for you. Without a TTL/YS converter you will have to adjust your strobes manually.![]()
Do I need to use a YS converter?![]()
It is not required to use the YS converter, but it is highly recommended. All SEA&SEA housings have a designated bulkhead for shooting your strobes manually. If you decide to let the camera adjust the lighting from your strobes automatically, you will then need to use a YS converter.![]()
Which YS converter should I buy?![]()
SEA&SEA currently has two models of YS converters, 1 for Nikon and for Canon. The current 50117 Nikon YS converter and 50118 Canon YS converters can be used with SEA&SEA strobes. SEA&SEA’s YS converters are designed, engineered and manufactured to function with SEA&SEA brand housings and strobes only. Any use of products from other origins will void the warranty of the TTL converter.
*Battery requirements for your strobe can be found in the Specification section of your user manual.
